Physical characteristics
Big leaf linden (Tilia platyphyllos) is a 35 to 45 m tall tree with young or hairy branches. The leaves are broadly ovate, with a pointed tip, with a cordate base or obliquely cordate to oblique-beheaded, regularly toothed, with two hairless sides on fertile branches. There are conspicuous axial brown hairs on the underside of the leaf, hairless toward the base. It often has an asymmetrical base, an oblique heart, or oblique-beheaded with spiny, serrated teeth.
- The petioles are glabrous and 3 to 5 cm long with 3-8 flowers.
- Flowers are up to 20, striped, greenish-yellow, and glabrous.
- Sepals are lanceolate, glabrous on the outside, while hairy on the inside near the base and near the tip. The sepals are 5 to 6 mm long and the flags are 30 to 40 cm larger than the petals.
- The ovary is fluffy, style is fluffy or not. The petals are cup-shaped-ovate and longer than the sepals. The fruit is almost spherical to pear-shaped, hardened, more or less striped, and distinctly velvety to blanket-shaped.
